    Plea:           debt
    County:         Wilts
Plaintiff:      Woodlok, Thomas, of Salisbury, merchant
Defendants:     Hungerford, Edward, of Penyngton, Hants, gent; Rypyngton, Richard, of Keyhavyn, Hants, yeoman
    Keyhaven, Hampshire
  • Keyhaven, Hampshire:
The earliest record now existing in the Southampton town books is dated 14 July, 1493, when the court assembled at Keyhaven.
In around 1551 Southampton obtained a monopoly in the landing of sweet wines.
Hurst Castle, completed by Henry VIII in 1544, was one of a chain of coastal fortresses, and is located at the end of a shingle spit extending 1.5 miles from Keyhaven.
  • Accumulating all the details of a Richard Rippington (various spellings) living in the mid 16th century it appears that he was initially a yeoman.
His appearance in court records in 1554 associated with Keyhaven in Hampshire does make a lot of sense alongside his later known career as a Vinter - a seller of wines - Keyhaven and the associated port area of Southampton was well know at this time as the major importing area of sweet wines.
Westminster was also a very good location for selling wines - as King Henry VIII has his wine cellars in the nearby Whitehall Palace.
  • The parish records of St. Margaret's, Westminster commenced in 1539, so there is no baptism record to show that Richard is the son of Francis, nor is there any record of Francis' origin.
Francis' burial in Westminster in 1542 and Richard's predicted birthdate and subsequent marriages in the same location suggest that it's highly likely that the two are related in some way.
Francis' Will of January 1543 may offer some enlightenment as to this possible familial link.
