  • John's baptism & birth records can't be found; so we don't know for certain that John (b. 1776) is actually his Father - but there's compelling evidence to suggest that he is:
The overt military background for both of them is a very strong association (particularly at this time in history), plus it does seem highly likely that John (Father) had been in Ireland prior to John's (Son) birth.
This strong military association is continued with the location of John's (Son) place of birth - in the same town as the Richmond Barracks, Templemore.
The other common associations are in England ... John (Father) was originally from Brineton in Shropshire (30 miles from the family home of the Repingtons at Amington) and signed-on in Lancashire (1795) ... John (Son) signed-on in Manchester, Lancashire (1846) - so it does look like they had common familial geographic origins.
On John's (Son) marriage certificate he gives his Father's name as John ... a pensioner .... to have had a pension in those times the most likely occupation for his Father was to have been a soldier.
John (Father) would have been 52 when John (Son) was born ... not entirely unbelievable, particularly for a professional soldier.
Finally, of course, they're both called John ... and in those times it was tradition for a father to call his first-born son after his own name.
With the strong link to Amington this does mean that although they insisted that their surname was Rippington (by signing it as such), that their origins are most likely to be from the Repingtons.
