  • There's no proof that the Thomas born in Tring is the same as that found later in Glatton, Eaton Socon and Haddenham - but his birth date pretty much matches that expected of the Thomas in these other locations and it's known that two of these Thomas' were married to a Joan/Joane ... so it's highly likely that all these are the one-and-the-same person.
If all this was the case what does seem significant is that the timing of Thomas' moves occur following significant events in the English Civil War.
Thomas leaves the Huntingdon area (Glatton & Eaton Socon) after the Royalists attacked Huntingdon and moves to the Ely area which was a Parliamentarian stronghold.

  • Events of political importance that have happened within Huntingdonshire, occurred in the course of the great civil war.
The first of these was the plundering of the town or Huntingdon, in August 1645, by the king's troops, which, commanded by the king in person,
and taking advantage of the absence of the parliamentary army in the west, had suddenly entered the associated eastern counties.
Again Huntingdonshire was the scene of a part of the hostilities occasioned, in 1648, by the appearance in arms of the Earl of Holland,
the Duke of Buckingham, and others in the royal cause, with an immediate view to the relief of Colchester.
  • Oliver Cromwell lived in Ely from 1636 to 1647.
    Dec 1642
The Eastern Association formed by Oliver Cromwell, a military league established at Cambridge between East Anglia, Hertfordshire and Huntingdonshire.
The Association created a large, well equipped army with high morale and religious zeal.
During the Civil War the parliamentary forces defended Haddenham.
Some of the older houses like The Old Porch House (1657) were constructed along Hill Row at this time.
