  • Details supplied by Alexander Macfarlane:-
An interesting Affidavit RE the Will of John Rippington of Culverton.
The Will was being read to his sons Joseph and William, when 'William forcibly tore the 2 sheets of paper and run out of the room' later destroying them.
William had been left 4s 6d weekly for life, his three children, Mary, Elizabeth and John, were each to receive £100 on reaching 21, and all the freehold and copyhold estate was left to Joseph.
    [£100 in 1781 is worth about £10,000 in 2012.
4s 6d  in 1781 is worth about £22 in 2012, £300 based upon average earnings.

In his brother Joseph's Will in 1786 he leaves Culverton to his wife, Celia, but seems to have healed the rift with William; as he leaves him all the freehold and copyhold estate, and in addition leaves £100 to William's fourth child, Sarah.
William didn't have long to make much of this bequest though as he died later this same year.
In Williams will he left his property to be sold (as can be seen to have happened in the auction announcement in Jackson's Oxford Journal on Saturday 17 May 1788) and the proceeds invested, the Interest to be paid 'to my wife Elizabeth for educating my four children and then to Elizabeth for life while widow, afterwards equally divided between the 4 children.
Elizabeth married John Smith in 1791, so the money must have then passed to the children Mary, Elizabeth, John and Sarah.
