Notes
- He was baptised with his mother's surname of Sims but the father is not named. Whilst from the name of Richard it might be suspected that Richard Rippington was the father there is a great bit of oral evidence that passed down through the family. According to one of his descendants Jennifer Wright there is a family legend.
"My grandmother told me that her mother Jane Gurden (nee) Sims had told her a story about a Sim(m)s being brought up in the wrong household and that they should be wealthy. Jane Sims was married to James Henry Gurden and he was the son of James Gurden and Sarah Simms. Sarah was the daughter of the illigitimate Richard. So now after some years of research I think this is what she was talking about. I had always assumed that it was Jane Sims family. I know that the Rippington family were wealthy landowners and Richard and Mary left everything to all their other children .I think the illigitimate Richard was brought up by another family and completely disowned by his true parents. I am sure this is the family grumble that has passed down several generations!"
The strange thing is that Richard seems to have lived and worked in Marston for his whole life, cheek by jowl with the Rippington family. - England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index: 1837-1915
