Notes
- The following is an explanation of how John could have been in Ireland:
It starts with the story of another young soldier ....
Arthur Wellesley's parents purchased a commission as an ensign for him in the 73rd Regiment of Foot in May 1787; in December he became a Lieutenant in the 76th Foot and the following month he transferred to the 41st in Dublin.
Later he moved to the 12th Light Dragoons.
When he arrived in Dublin, he became aide-de-camp to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and served in that post until March 1793.
On 30 April 1790 he was elected to the Irish parliament in Dublin as MP for Trim even though he was under age at the time.
He continued to represent the constituency until 1797 when he left to go to India.
He also continued in the army, moving up in rank through the purchase system:
30 June 1791 Captain in the 58th Foot
30 April 1793 Major in the 33rd Foot
September 1793 Lieutenant-Colonel
May 1796 Colonel
He saw active service for the first time between June 1794 and April 1795 when his regiment was posted to the Netherlands in the early stages of the French Wars.
So from January 1788 until June 1794 Arthur was in Ireland and in the 58th Foot regiment from 30 June 1791 until 30 April 1793.
Arthur Wellesley went on to become the first Duke of Wellington.
John Rippington joined the 58th Foot regiment on 3 July 1795 (just a couple of years after Wellington moved on), when it was still in Ireland.
The regiment didn't stay in Ireland (returning occasionally according to what records can be found), but it is expected that John met his future wife there and returned to the country after his discharge in 1817.
1798 was also the year of the Irish Rebellion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Rebellion_of_1798 - John was born in Brineton in Shropshire, which is 30 miles from the family home of the Repingtons at Amington ... therefore this does mean that although this family does seem to have insisted that their surname was Rippington (by signing it as such), their origins are most likely to be from the Repingtons.
