  • He made a will dated 9th April 1865, which is significant in that it was the day his son Richard was buried.  The value of the estate was £3,000.
    The main points of the will were;-
    a) His freehold premises in Speedwell St (formerly a foundry), and his houses in Marston St and Alma Place, Oxford, to be held in trust by his brothers Mark and Edwin.  The income therefrom to go to his wife Alice until her death and thereafter for the maintenance of his son Richard (Warland), daughter Elizabeth and any subsequent children.  When these children reach 21, or if girls get married before then, the properties to be sold and the proceeds divided between them.
    b) His house and land in Marston to be held in trust by Mark and Edwin and the income therefrom to go to his daughter Mary, wife of James Sims.  After her death the income to go to her children, subject to the payment of £500 equally among his four grandchildren Richard, William, John and Charles, sons of his deceased son Richard.
    c) The remainder to be held in trust by Mark and Edwin, sold, and the proceeds shared between his daughter Mary Sims and the children of his present wife Alice.
